The gifts people love to choose: give your loved ones some freedom with a “favourites” category.

Sleep: the priority of the first few months

Babies sleep a lot, and you'd like to get some sleep too. Safe sleeping is the basis of the registry: a cot with bars or crib, a firm mattress of the right size, fitted sheets and sleeping bags suited to the room temperature. Avoid duvets, pillows and cot bumpers, which are not recommended for newborns.

  • A cot or a co-sleeping crib, with its mattress.
  • Two or three fitted sheets and two sleeping bags (newborn, then 0–6 months).
  • A baby monitor, a gentle night light and a room thermometer.

Feeding, breast or bottle

Your feeding choice guides this part of the registry. For breastfeeding: a nursing pillow, breast pads, and possibly a breast pump. For bottle-feeding: a few bottles, a bottle brush, a drying rack and, if you like, a bottle warmer. Either way, bibs and muslins are always useful.

Bathtime and nappy changing

A changing table or unit at the right height saves your back. Add a washable changing mat, a baby bath or bath seat, two bath capes and a bath thermometer. Reusable nappies can also join the registry: a starter kit makes a lovely group gift.

Outings and the car

A car seat is required from the moment you leave the maternity ward: choose an R129 (i-Size) approved model, suited to your baby's size. The pushchair depends on your lifestyle: a compact city model, an all-terrain one, or a travel system with carrycot. A baby carrier or sling rounds out the set nicely.

  • An i-Size car seat, ideally compatible with the pushchair.
  • A pushchair or travel system, with a parasol and rain cover.
  • A baby carrier or sling, a changing bag and a footmuff for winter.

Clothing: less than you'd think

Newborn-size clothes last just a few weeks, yet they're the gifts people buy most spontaneously. On your registry, favour sizes 3 and 6 months, easy-to-wear wrap bodysuits, sleepsuits, a hat and socks. Note the size and season in each item's description.

Ideas that truly delight

Alongside the essentials, leave room for heartfelt gifts: a birth journal to fill in, a handmade mobile, a newborn photo session, meals delivered during the first weeks or a few hours of housekeeping. These gestures help new parents far more than yet another cuddly toy.

Frequently asked questions

How many items should a baby registry have?+

There's no fixed rule. A registry of 30 to 60 items, with a range of prices, lets everyone find a gift within their budget. It's better to have a few big items to split between several people and lots of small gestures than a list of very expensive products.

Should clothes be included?+

Yes, but in sizes 3 to 12 months rather than newborn size, which is often given in abundance. Specify the season so the clothes are worn at the right time.
